The V Monument from Soldaat van Oranje Finds a New Home in Overloon
The V Monument, which held a prominent place in the foyer of the TheaterHangaar in Katwijk for more than ten years, will find a permanent home at Oorlogsmuseum Overloon. The monument will be officially unveiled on Wednesday, 14 October, exactly 82 years after Overloon was liberated in 1944.
The artwork was specially created for Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange), a Dutch musical production based on a true story. The large letter V stands for, among other things, Peace, Freedom and Resistance, reflecting the central themes of the production.
Personal items from the Second World War have been incorporated into the monument. These include identity documents, letters, photographs, medals and other objects that hold special memories of the war.
Since 2015, the monument had been a recognisable part of the visitor experience at the TheaterHangaar. The final performance took place on 12 July. With the closure of the venue, the foyer in which the monument had occupied a prominent place for many years also disappeared.
Although the production has come to an end, the desire to pass on the stories and history behind Soldaat van Oranje to new generations remains. Oorlogsmuseum Overloon provides a fitting setting for this.
The date of 14 October was chosen for a reason. On this day in 1944, Overloon was liberated after fierce fighting. The V Monument will therefore have a home at a location dedicated to preserving the stories of the Second World War and passing them on to future generations.
Representatives of Oorlogsmuseum Overloon and Soldaat van Oranje will speak at the ceremonial unveiling. Guests will include donors who contributed to the monument and current and former employees of Soldaat van Oranje.
