BMW R12 Motorradgespann

From 1935 onwards, BMW (Munich) produced the R12, a heavy motorcycle that quickly became a staple of the Wehrmacht's vehicle fleet. Configured as a so-called Wehrmachtsgespann – fitted with a particularly rugged and off-road-capable sidecar – the R12 was widely used for reconnaissance, courier duties and the transport of light weapons. Its air-cooled twin-cylinder boxer engine produced around 18 hp, sufficient to operate reliably on unpaved roads and difficult terrain. A distinguishing feature was its hydraulically operated front brake, an innovation that placed BMW at the forefront of motorcycle engineering at the time. An MG 34 machine gun could be mounted on the sidecar, making the combination suitable for combat patrols as well. By 1941, more than 36,000 units had been built, making the R12 one of the most widely produced military motorcycles of the Second World War.
