Leichter Panzerspähwagen (Fu) Sd.Kfz. 223

This year we are proud to welcome a remarkable newcomer to Militracks: the Leichter Panzerspähwagen (Fu) Ausf. A., Sd.Kfz. 223.
The Sd.Kfz.223 was developed as the radio and command variant within the family of light armoured reconnaissance vehicles (Leichter Panzerspähwagen). Externally almost identical to the Sd.Kfz.222, it was distinguished by a large folding frame aerial for long-range communications. Rather than the 222's 2-cm cannon, the 223 carried a single 7.92 mm machine gun (MG 34). The vehicle was operated by a crew of three. Thanks to its radio equipment, the 223 served as a vital link in the German Army's fast-moving reconnaissance tactics, enabling frontline observations to be relayed directly to higher command posts. Between 1936 and early 1944, only around 550 were built — considerably fewer than the nearly 990 Sd.Kfz.222s produced. This limited production, combined with its specialised role, makes the Sd.Kfz.223 one of the rarer armoured cars of the period.
This particular vehicle was meticulously and painstakingly restored by its British owner, the Weald Foundation. We are delighted and very grateful that they are joining us again at Militracks this year.
