Opel Kapitän mit Holzvergaser

This civilian Opel Kapitän was the last new Opel model introduced before the outbreak of the Second World War, presented at the 1939 Geneva Motor Show. Featuring a unitary body and a 2.5-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 55 hp, it was one of Europe's most modern full-size passenger cars. Over 25,000 were built before civilian production ceased in 1940. This example is fitted with a wood gas generator — a widespread wartime conversion when petrol was scarce and civilian vehicles were adapted to run on wood gas.
