15 cm Panzerwerfer 42 auf Selbstfahrlafette Sd.Kfz. 4/1
The Panzerwerfer 42 is an armored rocket launcher based on the Opel Maultier, a half-track truck. The Wehrmacht urgently needed a mobile platform for its Nebelwerfer rockets: the conspicuous smoke trails left when firing immediately betrayed the battery’s position, allowing enemy artillery to respond quickly. The solution was this three-man vehicle with ten launch tubes for 15 cm rockets. Twenty rockets were carried on board — enough for two salvos with a range of up to 6,500 meters. Some 300 were built between 1943 and 1945. Allied soldiers nicknamed the weapon ‘Moaning Minnie’.
