StuG III Sd.Kfz. 142

In December 1942, Alkett (Berlin) and MIAG (Hannover) began production of the Sturmgeschütz III fitted with a long-barrel gun (L/48). Like its predecessor with the short 7.5 cm gun (L/24), it was based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen III — but the more powerful armament made this version considerably more effective as a tank destroyer. The crew consisted of four men. In addition to the 7.5 cm gun, the vehicle carried one or two machine guns of 7.92 mm calibre, making it a versatile and feared weapon on the battlefield.
