GMC CCKW

The GMC model CCKW was the workhorse of the U.S. Army. This 2.5‑ton truck was mainly used for transporting troops and supplies. Reliable, simple, and fast, about 600,000 of them were produced. Do you know what the type designation CCKW stands for? The first C indicates the year in which the model was developed. If you know that for GMC the letter A stands for 1939, then you’ll understand that C represents 1941 (two letters later means two years later). The second C refers to the cab, which is conventional in design. In this normal cab, the driver sits behind the engine. That’s different from other designs, where the driver sits above the engine. The latter is often called COE, which stands for Cab Over Engine. Then there’s the K — at GMC, the K meant that all wheels were driven. Finally, the W refers to the double rear axle, and both of those axles were driven.
